After searching for months, you finally landed an assistant job. While you were excited to start a week ago, the first day is tomorrow, and now you feel clueless and apprehensive. You know you are going to make mistakes, and now your worries keep you up at night. Cut it out! The key with any job is to make the right kind of mistakes—mistakes that will allow you to learn and grow rather than look like an idiot. To that end, there are some simple Do's and Don'ts that will help you both on your first day and in the long run.
It's finally happened. You sent out a million resumes, and the wait was excruciating. Now your phone is making the sweet sound of the Final Countdown ring tone that you assigned to all your potential employers. The news is good! You have an interview tomorrow. Of course, if we know anything about the current job market, it's that competition is high. How can you set yourself apart when you're competing against dozens if not hundreds of people?
Finding paying work seems to be a full-time job in and of itself (if you want to work for free, we're hiring). Whether you've been looking for a new job for a month or a year, there can come a point where your energy drops and securing solid employment seems like a fantasy. It's rough enough being glued to job boards and looking for the business card of that guy you met last summer at the coffee shop who seemed like he was hiring. So no judgment here if you've spent the last few days watching re-runs in your pjs. But we know it's tough so we've got a few suggestions for helping you get through the job search blues.
Ever go through job listings, see a potentially awesome gig, then see the phrase "attach cover letter" and move on? What is it about the cover letter that feels daunting? A cover letter is your very short opportunity to draw in the reader. Without your engaging smile or ready explanations for your resume gaps handy, you've got to show some personality and competence in just a few lines. Still, with a bit of practice and re-writing, you can create a stellar cover letter. Yes, we've got tips.
One of the frustrating aspects of the job hunt is not knowing why you didn't get the call-back. Sometimes you sit there and think "I'm wonderful! Why does no one want to talk to me about it?" Of course, this is an unanswerable question; but, if the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results, then maybe sending out the same resume is insane. Could changing your resume style help you land an interview?
LA is seriously into its own image. To be fair, most places probably are as well, but in LA appearance tends to matter quite a bit. This can create some especially tricky decisions for the job seeker. You figured out how to present yourself on paper, maybe even smooth talked your way through a phone interview, now this potential employer wants to meet you. The oh-so-important question arises: What do you wear?
It may be an obvious question, but we gotta ask anyway. When was the last time you actually looked at your resume? Like, really checked out the formatting, dates, and…dum dum dum…content? We thought that might be the case. So let’s do it together. Bust out that resume and let’s get it in better shape. This is, after all, the first impression you will make on any employer. You wouldn’t go to an interview in a stained shirt and frayed shorts, so don’t send out a tattered lame resume. And, if you did interview like that, please tell us about it.
