Safe(r) Sex

safer-sexMost of us have heard statistics about HPV, HIV, gonorrhea, pregnancy (!) ... the list goes on and on. Let us break it down for you: sex is fun, but you can't afford to expose yourself to major risks. The LA Times just reported about the growing proclivity of those in early adulthood to have more partners. Protect yourself as much as possible. Let's face it, STDs and unintended conception are just not that much fun, and can lead to unwanted expenses.

Start smart. If you're think you're ready enough for sex, you should be mature enough to buy condoms. There are even little check-out kiosks if you're embarrassed to look the cute checker in the face. Unfortunately, condoms are not really that cheap which can be a strong deterrent to stocking up before your big night (or afternoon). Check out sites like Condoms 4 Free where you'll only be charged shipping or get a steep discount. Another good source are local shops who are doing their part to promote safe sex. At LOVEcondoms, you can find a list of stores to hit up.

If you think something might have gone not quite according to plan, you can get help at free clinics like Planned Parenthood and Saban Free Clinic and many more across the county. Sites like The Body and Your STD Help are designed to help you get in touch with a local provider. It's way better to find out what is really going on in your body than stress about potential problems. We know it may seem easier to just ignore your health, but, if you do have a situation, it is way better to nip it in the bud than wait for it to seriously mess up your life.

In the case that you've acquired an STD (like most of the sexually active population), make sure to disclose it to previous and future partners. It may seem the height of shirking responsibility, but you can even send an anonymous e-card. So man- or woman- up, use condoms, get tested regularly and get treated for anything that comes up.
