'Tis the season. No, not that season. It's not jolly fat man time; it's time for plunging necklines and rising hemlines to represent every job in America. 'Tis the season for jack-o-lanterns and trick or treating and costumes. Those "disguises" could run you a pretty penny, so stay with us for ideas on cheap Halloween costumes.

Our number one tip is to stay open to possibility. Inspiration can come from anywhere (especially if you know where to look).

Check out thrift stores. We told you about tons of great bargains for regular clothes, but consider hitting up the same locations for your party duds. One man's leather pants for clubbing are another's perfect costume piece. You can score sequined shrugs and denim jumpsuits or browse through specialty racks of gently used Halloween costumes. Since many thrift stores benefit great non-profits, it's a win for everyone's pocketbook.

Trade with your friends. Last year's masterpiece is this year's has-been. But not if your friend hangs with a different crew. This is especially effective if your buddy lives in a different city. Postage (check rates!) is probably cheaper than a whole new costume. If you've got a bunch of friends looking for help, do a modified clothing exchange aka a costume exchange.

Clean out your closet. That old pair of fishnets could make a great pair of gloves this season. Add a black t-shirt and some black lipstick and voila! generic goth. Sure it's been done, but give it your own spin or just don't care. Remember, this holiday is about candy. Well, for some at any rate. With a little make-up and a lot of humor, you're sure to create a costume in your budget.
