If you somehow begged, borrowed, or redeemed your way into airline tickets, go you! Before you jet off, however, consider that there are many potential hidden costs of travel. Don’t be discouraged, be prepared. With a little planning, you could minimize unexpected outlays and have more dollars for straight fun.
Saving money starts before you even get to the airport. Taking a cab can cost big bucks, so try and con (oops, we mean ask nicely) a friend into taking you. Offer to bring the coffee in exchange for that early drop-off. If no one is available on a Tuesday at 2pm (really? people still have jobs?), consider some public transit options. Fly-away buses will shuttle you to the airport for a pretty low fee.
While you’re still at home, pack snacks! Airport mark-up in most cities is pretty hefty. While inflation has pushed street prices up as well, you’re still more likely to find a better deal on the outside. Pretzels, sandwiches, fruits (beware in the case of international travel), pretty much anything tasty and portable will do. Having munchies handy will keep you from paying way too much during those long waiting periods. Tip: If you don’t eat your peanuts on the plane, you can save them for later. Those little packets are a good pick me up during a long travel day.
Although it may seem that bringing water is out due to ‘security’, you’re not totally locked in. Bring an empty bottle and, after TSA, fill it up at a free water fountain. Now you can save that $3 for a bar or museum. And, if you’re craving a soda, hold out for the plane. Non-alcoholic beverages are still served gratis.
If you plan on watching a movie, don’t forget to bring your own headphones. That’s another $3-$5 staying in your pocket.
And, if you tend to get cold, bring a warm scarf or coat. Did you know many airlines charge for blankets now? It’s a little crazy, but we’d like to avoid hypothermia without a surcharge.
Bon Voyage!
